I recently had a chance to touch base with Myrna Wagner, Vice President & Director of Business Development for Swinerton Management & Consulting, and ask her a few questions about her firm, which is one of our Bay Platinum sponsors.

One of our most notable programs has been the San Mateo County Community College District, where we’ve been providing program, project, and construction management services for close to twenty years on over 100 projects, many of those projects being notable in size and complexity, on three college campuses, with an estimated value of $1.3 Billion. What differentiates your firm in terms of approach, talent, tools, and values?
Our Approach is simple, “What can we do for our Clients?” Answering this basic question helps us determine our strategy to ensure that we are delivering the services the client needs for a successful project. We strive to be our clients’ technical expert, to be transparent and accountable, and to help them realize their vision and be their advocate and trusted partner. We tailor our services to each client, ensuring that we bring the best practices, lessons learned, outstanding expertise, and timely information for informed decision-making. We strive to avoid surprises and bring the best talent we have to the table.
How long have you been a sponsor of SMPS?
We’ve been sponsors of SMPS throughout the years, beginning with my tenure here at Swinerton that started in 1999.
What are some of the memorable or key events of SMPS that your firm has been involved with?
SMPS has been and continues to be my foundation for my personal growth. Because SMPS has been so instrumental in developing and training me in my career, sharing my leadership experience and knowledge became the next logical step. In my life and work journey I’ve learned that the greatest gift we can bestow on anyone is to not hold on to what we know, but give it away freely and unconditionally. This approach has led me to contribute to our profession in Marketing Education, Business Development, Peer Association Outreach, and Client Organization Involvement.
My own personal and astounding experience with SMPS’s PLS (Presidents Leadership Symposium) inspired me to get involved in educating the future leaders of SMPS. Because of this experience, when I had the opportunity to become a PLS Leader, it was a resounding Yes. My experience as the Chair was even more rewarding than my own. Working with the National Staff on the Programming, presenting to three separate PLS classes, forging new relationships and friends across the country, and having mentoring opportunities have all contributed in my quest to be more of a thoughtful leader.
Likewise, when I had the opportunity and honor to serve as Co-Chair of the National Conference in San Francisco in 2012, leadership, collaboration, and a financial success became primary goals and our mantra. Working closely and collaboratively with the National Staff was very important to me and subsequently they became core members of our Conference Committee, playing a pivotal role in our success.
At our Chapter Level, a notable program that I enjoyed and that was incredibly successful was the Public Sector Client Roundtables, where we would get 10 to 12 public agency clients in a room and attendees were guaranteed an opportunity to meet with no less than two of the clients. Attendance was outstanding; we had more than 200 people attend, but, most importantly, the value this Roundtable brought to our members was unmatched at the time. Where else can you meet ten clients at one time?
