Member Spotlight: Matt Carvel
What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I happened upon the A/E/C industry through a friend while I was in between jobs.
I have always enjoyed working with creative people to balance my more analytical/operational traits. When joining the A/E/C industry, of course, I quickly learned that this industry is filled with very bright artists across all realms of design. My career move allowed me to develop a creative muscle – and I have since never looked back!
I was previously working at a construction toy company… I now work at a company that does this on a larger scale!
Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
I joined SMPS after a recommendation from a few colleagues as I was seeking somewhere to share ideas about sales/marketing best practices.
However, SMPS has ended up being so much more. I have connected with people who provide invaluable insights and guidance on my marketing campaigns. And it is refreshing to connect with a community of marketers who share the same daily work challenges and experiences.
Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
I work a hybrid schedule but genuinely love going into the office as often as possible, even if I'm the only one there. The pandemic made me realize how much I loved the office!
Favorite book?
Shoe Dog by Phil Knight
Favorite local spot?
I’m a major lover of all baked goods, so you can often find me devouring an almond croissant for breakfast at Arsicault Bakery in San Francisco.
Vacation spot you recommend?
The Dolomites in Italy and New Orleans, Louisiana
What do you like to do most in your free time?
Cycling. I race for a local Bay Area team and spend much of my free time riding and training around the beautiful roads California has to offer.
