Member Spotlight: Chelsea Hall
Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Chelsea got into the A/E/C industry and learn about her favorites.
Chelsea Hall
Marketing Coordinator
Salter
What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I actually fell into it. I’d worked in the same building as Salter’s San Francisco office in another marketing role before happening upon the opportunity to join the marketing team at Salter. The work suits me a lot better, so I’m glad it worked out this way.
Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
I joined SMPS under the recommendation of Katie Spurlock. In the time that I was privileged to work with Katie, she shared many stories from SMPS that intrigued me. I haven’t been with SMPS long, but so far, it’s living up to everything Katie told me it would be.
What’s Your favorite memory of an SMPS event?
Being present for the awarding of the first Catherine F. Spurlock Volunteer of the Year Award was a highlight for me. I don’t know the winner personally, but congratulations Ava!
Favorite job task?
I’m sure it’s no secret that my favorite part of my job is working on Salter’s video projects. That includes our annual holiday videos (which is one big creative labor of love) but I also enjoy the smaller projects where our consultants need video elements as a part of their projects.
Least favorite job task?
Probably data entry for our CRM. It’s necessary and important, but maybe not the most fun.
Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
I am still working from home but I’m looking into a hybrid work model. I really enjoy working from home, but there will be times when being in the office is necessary to complete various projects.
Any hobbies?
I roller skate. I’m teaching myself to jam skate, which is a combination of skating and dancing. It’s a lot of fun, but I’m very happy for the knee pads and wrist guards because there’s lots of trial and error!
Favorite TV show?
Usually whatever I am currently watching. So, right now, it is What We Do in the Shadows.
Favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Forrest Gump and has been for as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl, I named my pet rabbit Forrest and I would let him out of his hutch so I could say “Run Forrest, run!”
Favorite Book?
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
Favorite local restaurant?
It’s hard to choose! I have favorites for different things… If you are in Oakland I love Marufuku on Telegraph Avenue for ramen (I hear there’s one in SF too). In Alameda I recommend La Penca Azul on Park Street for amazing enchiladas (and just about everything else on the menu). In Berkeley I love Jupiter on Shattuck Avenue for pizza and live music on the weekends.
Favorite local spot?
It’s dwindling now, but the Berkeley Flea Market is a favorite. It has been a cultural hub for the community for so long. Hopefully we can hold on to it for a long time.
Any upcoming vacation plans?
Not anything upcoming but I just returned from Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. It was an amazing trip. The people are welcoming, the food is phenomenal, and I had the opportunity to try a lot of outdoor activities I’d never done before. I recommend it as a place to visit if you have not been!
Secret skill?
I have never had a brain freeze. After rigorous testing at the request of numerous friends, I have concluded that it is impossible for me to have one. But I hear they aren’t very fun, so that’s okay with me.
