    Sponsor Spotlight: Carollo Engineers

Earlier this year I had a chance to touch base with Diana Leonard, Manager of Corporate Communications at Carollo Engineers, and ask her a few questions about her firm, which is one of our Redwood sponsors.

Tell us about your firm and services.
Carollo Engineers helps municipalities, public agencies, private developers, and industries solve their most pressing water challenges. Our industry leadership is driven by a singular focus on water and a commitment to collaboration. As a trusted partner, we work closely with our clients to deliver a full array of water-related planning, design, and construction-management solutions rooted in creativity, value, and resilience. This passion for client-centered service is embodied by more than 1,200 dedicated employees in over 50 offices across North America who live and work in the communities their projects aim to improve. To learn more about how We See Water Differently, call (800) 523-5826 or visit www.carollo.com.

How many years have you been in business?
Carollo has been in business for nearly 90 years and has never deviated from its exclusive focus on providing water and wastewater solutions.

Tell us about some notable projects.

    Here are a few:

San Francisco Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant SEP 020 Headworks Project
Carollo’s design and construction services teams are working in close collaboration with SFPUC and construction manager general contractor Sundt-Walsh to deliver a world class headworks for a world class city. This new all-weather headworks will replace the capacity of two existing aging headworks and address the needs of various stakeholders, including the community, by improving efficiency, reducing operations and maintenance requirements and costs, increasing flexibility, and improving the surrounding community through reduced odor and noise impacts and sustainable practices. This project uses an innovative vertical (stacked) construction and foundation design to address challenges including tight space and high groundwater, among others.

Fresno Southeast Surface Water Treatment Facility
Carollo provided preliminary design, final design, and construction management services for the Southeast Surface Water Treatment Facility, a new 13-mile, 72-inch diameter raw water pipeline and surface water treatment facility that treats surface water from the Kings River. The facility is an integral part of the City of Fresno’s mission to transition their water supply from groundwater to sustainable surface water. As a result of the project, in 2020 the City provided more treated surface water than groundwater to its customers – just two years after the new treatment plant became operational.

City of Sacramento Accelerated Water Meter Program (AWMP)
Carollo has provided program management services, including coordinating and tracking installation of 40,000 water meters and 60 miles of water mains through planning, design, construction, and integration for the City of Sacramento’s Accelerated Water Meter Program. Implemented in 2015 as a way to reduce water use and get ahead of an upcoming water metering mandate, the City of Sacramento has used the AWMP to fast-track its water meter installations. In addition to managing meter installations, Carollo also administered a multi-faceted outreach effort to build public support for the program, proactively address customer concerns, and communicate ongoing program activities. The AWMP is currently projected to be completed $18 million under budget.

What differentiates your firm in terms of approach, talent, tools, and values?
We value people. While water is our focus and area of expertise, when it comes down to it our passion is driven by people—our clients, our employees, and our communities. As one of a few privately-owned firms in the water sector, we are nimble, innovative, and solution-driven. We are proud to have some of the best minds in the industry working to implement our client- and community-driven approach. Our focus on research and our proprietary tools and methods, including our state-of-the-art Water ARC® facility, Blue Plan-it® planning and decision management tool, and CAMP® intensive design workshops all pair with our talented project and design staff to give clients access to a complete suite of tools and knowledge.

How long have you been a sponsor of SMPS?
    2 years.

What are some of the memorable or key events of SMPS that your firm has been involved with?
We haven’t had the opportunity to participate in many events due to COVID, but I was a co-leader of the 2021 SMPS SFBAC and Sacramento CPSM Study Group. Carollo congratulates the Marketers that have passed the CPSM exam and wishes good luck to those who are scheduled to take it soon!

Tina Barni Aday is the Marketing Director at Lea & Braze Engineering. She writes for the Shortlist and is on the SMPS SF Communications Committee. She can be reached at [email protected].
