    Member Spotlight: Cathy Kohatsu

Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Cathy got into the A/E/C industry, her TV, movie, book, and vacation recommendations, and much more!

What led you to the A/E/C industry?
After graduating from college, I wanted to live and work in San Francisco. I started at the front desk at a cost consulting firm, and when the marketer left I stepped up to help—the rest is history.

Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
Being new to marketing, my manager recommended joining. I’ve stayed a member because of the opportunities to learn new skills and maintain/build my network. I’ve been an active volunteer for several years, and I especially enjoy the camaraderie of collaborating with other volunteers. And because I’m an introvert, my chapter duties nudge me to grow professionally and get to know other members.

    What’s your favorite job task?
Gathering and promoting content for social media and collaborating with colleagues on community give-back efforts.

    Any hobbies?
Dancing – especially swing dancing (lindy hop), exploring cities, photography, and concerts.

    Favorite TV shows?
Firefly Lane, The Parisian Agency, and Northern Exposure.

    Favorite movie?
    Amelie

    Favorite Book?
The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

    Favorite local restaurant?
    Millennium in Berkeley

    Favorite local spot?
    Walking along the Bay

Is there any vacation spot you recommend?
Bali – a lovely mix of culture, color, and beauty.

Do you have a secret skill?
I have a blackbelt in karate that I achieved while studying abroad in Japan during college.

What do you like to do most in your free time?
Read about and try local restaurants/bars and explore new places.
