Member Spotlight: Devon Kurcina, CPSM
Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Devon got into the A/E/C industry, her secret skill, and much more!
What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I was destined to be a marketing & business development professional in the A/E/C industry… My mom was a Business Developer for environmental firms, my brother is a civil engineer, and my dad was a construction superintendent. I’ve stayed in the industry because I love the close connections I’ve developed in my career and I am continually inspired by the new relationships made each day.
Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
I heard it was a good place to find fellow marketers who understood the daily struggles. Proposal burnout is a real thing, but it helps to share your challenges, successes, and coping mechanisms with peers.
Favorite memory of an SMPS event?
In 2013, I was the SMPS SFBAC President and I can honestly say it changed my life. I learned imperative leadership skills that helped shape my career today.
Favorite job task?
Coming up with new innovative campaigns that push the limits of our industry.
Least favorite job task?
Herding cats.
How has 2020-2021 changed you?
I was a workaholic pre-pandemic and I have learned how to have a better work-life balance with my family.
Secret skill?
I have a secret passion for cleaning up databases… it is, strangely, a great stress reliever.
