Member Spotlight: Katerina Marovich
Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Katerina got into the A/E/C industry, her TV, movie, book, and vacation recommendations, and much more!
What led you to the A/E/C industry?
Happenstance! I started with Summit at the front desk right out of college but quickly shifted into the marketing role. My dad has been in the construction/architecture industry my whole life, so I was right at home.
Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
It was recommended to me by Marina Starkey of TLCD Architecture. Being the only marketer at my firm and fresh to the scene, it was the perfect steppingstone for me to get acclimated to my new role.
What is your favorite memory of an SMPS event?
The PRC in San Diego was spectacular! As my first official SMPS event I was nervous that I would be overwhelmed, but I felt so included and that I was with “my people.” The lectures and resources were very informative and inspiring, and how cool was that boat ride through the San Diego harbor at the “Stay Classy, San Diego” event?! Already looking forward to applying some new skills to my day-to-day and attending the PRC in Portland next year. The funniest moment of the trip: learning how similar the words merger and murder sound if you’re talking excitedly about business development…woof! We all had a good laugh at the BD Roadmap for Success session with Barbara. 😉
What’s your favorite job task?
Photography – I’m still pretty green when it comes to taking photos, but I particularly love catching candids of my coworkers.
Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
Hybrid – I work from home one day a week, but I’m mostly in the office.
Any hobbies?
Knitting, crocheting, beading, calligraphy—anything working with my hands.
Favorite TV shows?
Fleabag
Favorite movie?
In the Mood for Love, directed by Wong Kar-wai. It’s poetry in motion.
Favorite Book?
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
Favorite local restaurant?
Willi’s Seafood Bar in Healdsburg. Don’t skip the Sourdough bread, trust me.
Favorite local spot?
Foothill Regional Park, Armstrong Woods, or Mt. Tam for hikes.
Is there any vacation spot you recommend?
Croatia! (I’m biased as my family is from the Dalmatia coast, but I promise you won’t regret it!)
Do you have any upcoming vacation plans?
I just (very luckily) returned from Hawaii, but you’ll catch me taking advantage of this great snow in Tahoe sometime soon!
Do you have a secret skill?
I’ve been able to whistle since I was about 2. I’ve been told it was jarring to see a baby whistle.
What do you like to do most in your free time?
Knit and/or hike. If I was coordinated enough, I’d figure out a way to do both at the same time…
