Member Spotlight: Jillian Grabenstein

What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I ended up getting an internship in the A/E/C industry at an MEP and sustainability consulting firm out of Oakland during my junior year of college. I fell in love with the writing and graphic design components of being a proposal coordinator and I’ve stuck with it ever since!
Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
I joined SMPS to have a larger community of marketers/business developers outside of my firm and to keep up-to-date on industry trends. I took on an active role by joining the Membership Committee and ultimately becoming Director of Membership from 2020 – 2022. I have made so many connections and continuously use SMPS as a resource for marketing, business development, and even personal advice!
Do you have a favorite memory of an SMPS event?
My favorite memory is the 2022 Topaz Awards! It was really inspiring to see Past President Shannon Daggett lead the effort to bring back our chapter’s awards program and I’m so glad I was on the planning committee for it. Seeing the actual event come to life was amazing!
What’s your favorite job task?
Over the past few years, I have started really enjoying interview prep!
What’s your least favorite job task?
Tracking down info!
Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
I primarily work from home.
How has 2020-2021 changed you?
It made me realize I am much more of an introvert than I thought! It also gave me an extra appreciation for my friends and family.
Do you have any hobbies?
Barre, reading, video games, watching scary movies, and volunteering at the East Bay SPCA!
Do you have a favorite TV show?
The Walking Dead and The Bachelor/Bachelorette! Weird mix I know!
Do you have a favorite movie?
Too many to list! I did just watch Everything Everywhere All at Once and I loved it!
Do you have a favorite book?
Again, too many to list…If I had to pick one, I’d go with FOE by Iain Reid.
Do you have a favorite local restaurant?
Teleferic in Walnut Creek
Do you have a favorite local spot?
I love going to Fieldwork Brewing Company at the City Center in San Ramon! It’s five minutes from my house and I love getting a beer flight.
Is there any vacation spot you recommend?
Carmel-by-the-Sea! It’s a short drive from the Bay Area and it’s the perfect relaxation spot.
Do you have any upcoming vacation plans?
San Diego in May and then Austin, TX in August for A/E/C Amplify!
Do you have a secret skill?
I make some pretty good banana muffins!
What do you like to do most in your free time?
I love walking my German shepherd/husky mix and exploring wineries with my boyfriend!
