President’s Message – May 2023
This is a scene from Lucifer, Season 6, Episode 1, that I watched recently, and which aired on Netflix.
Lucifer: Chloe, you are a truth-seeker. That's what made you a great detective.
But me, I'm a wonder-seeker.
Chloe Decker: You seek wonder?
Lucifer: Well, also drսg, debauchery, and now certain extinct whiskeys, but yes, so
tonight you are just gonna have to enjoy the wonder with me. Cheers.
Just like Lucifer, I recently identified as a wonder-seeker. In my work, I have traditionally been viewed as a doer—the person getting everything done. That characteristic leans heavily into another working style called tenacity. But the identification of wonder in my portfolio of working styles opened up a whole new view on my career.
Wonder-seeking has meant looking for opportunities to grow, to change, and to evolve. In another working-styles profile I’m a learner. They both show up in the same way—looking for ways to stretch my performance and that of those around me.
SMPS has been integral to helping me move out of my day-to-day activities that rely on tenacity and embrace the wonder-seeker. Whether attending a MarketShare on Emerging Tech, working on an abstract for a conference, or reading an article in Marketer, SMPS provides the tools to get off of our hamster wheels and embrace learning something new.
Other industry organizations are good for wonder-seeking too. In March, I attended a two-day program on the future of engineering sectors. We talked about which A/E/C firm would build the first habitat on Mars. That was actually the second time I had considered space as a viable vertical market. The first was more than a decade ago at an SMPS event.
So, for all you Lucifers out there, I hope to see you at an SMPS event or two in the coming months. For all you Chloes, SMPS has something for truth-seekers as well. But that will have to be another newsletter.
