    Member Spotlight: Angela Zuluaga-Adkisson

Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Angela got into the A/E/C industry, her favorite book, her favorite vacation spot, and much more!

What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I stumbled upon the A/E/C industry by chance. I began my career as a receptionist at a structural engineering firm, where I was immediately struck by the passion and dedication of my colleagues, the company culture, and the exciting projects they were working on. Despite taking a break and enjoying my time working at a school district for five years, I found myself yearning to return to the A/E/C industry. I missed the sense of fulfillment that comes with contributing to projects that make a difference in our communities, and the inspiring individuals who work in this field. Not to mention, the innovative work environments and access to cutting-edge technology that make this industry an exciting place to be.

Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
I joined SMPS because my firm encouraged us to be active in industry-related organizations. However, after attending a few SMPS events, I quickly realized the immense value the organization offers. SMPS not only provides exceptional educational resources and growth opportunities, but also offers a platform for networking with like-minded individuals. The events organized by SMPS are not only informative but also enjoyable, creating an atmosphere that fosters camaraderie and connection. These benefits are what have kept me engaged with SMPS and motivated me to continue being a member.

Do you have a favorite memory of an SMPS event?
At the first event I attended I was asked to introduce myself by coming to the podium and speaking in front of everyone. As an introvert, it was tough, but it started the path of growth by doing difficult things.

The thrill of getting a proposal together.

What’s your least favorite job task?
The last two hours before the proposal is to be submitted.

Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
    Hybrid.

    How has 2020-2021 changed you?

    Do you have any hobbies?
Running (albeit slow), roller skating, reading, dancing Latin music, and doing colorful crafts.
