President’s Message – October 2023
In September, our Programs Committee facilitated a fun and engaging brainstorm session where we collected education program ideas from members. The ideas covered a broad spectrum of topics from leadership to client and business development, communications, digital marketing techniques and technologies, sustainability, and well-being. Sorting through these topics now as we plan out our education calendar gives me a newfound appreciation for the depth and breadth of our Society’s commitment to lifelong learning.
On any given day, SMPS members may be called upon to research a new market opportunity, plan a regional expansion, engage high-value prospects and close deals, craft compelling copy, organize a client event, or analyze website engagement — not to mention lead a team of fellow marketers who might be doing all of this stuff at the same time every day. And even all that just covers the six Domains of Practice, within any one of which we find no shortage of opportunities to pursue mastery in our craft.
Underneath all these are some fundamental, foundational skills that we all rely on to succeed in our roles. In my career, I can think of none that have been more critical than writing. The ability to weave words that resonate with our audiences, convey key messages, and catalyze action is essential for business developers, proposal pros, and marketing and communications experts alike. So, what better way to kick off our year of programming than with a workshop designed to enhance your professional prowess in promotional prose?
In this month’s virtual education program, we’re honored to host Barbara Shuck, FSMPS, CPSM, who brings over 25 years of A/E/C marketing experience to you in the form of our Writer’s Workshop for Non-Writers, Newbies, and Better-Writer-Wannabes. Whether you are a veteran copywriter, or someone who shivers at the sight of a blank page, you’ll find practical tips and techniques you can apply to convey your thoughts with clarity and conviction. You don’t want to miss this: register on our website here.
Other Upcoming Events
SMPS DEI + AEC Town Hall: Neurodiversity in the Workplace (October 10)
Our Society’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) recognizes that professionals with diverse expertise and experiences are critical to sustaining a thriving industry. I’m looking forward to expanding my awareness of neurodiversity in the workplace at this complimentary town hall facilitated by the SMPS DEI committee.
CPSM Study Group Kicks Off October 11
Speaking of the Domains of Practice, perhaps you’re ready to demonstrate your proficiency with the Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) credential. As a CPSM, I highly encourage you to join a study group if you’re considering the exam (even a little bit). The study group format not only gave me guidance on the content, but also provided a consistent cadence and group of accountability partners that helped me stay on track through the multi-month journey leading to the exam. Plus, you get to celebrate together when it’s all over!
SMPS Pinnacle Experience | November 7
Pinnacle is an exclusive SMPS event for members who serve as “first chair” leading their firm’s marketing and business development strategies. Immediate Past President Laurie Lumish, CPSM, will be there representing our chapter, so if you’re attending say hello and let her know your favorite takeaway from the conference. You might just earn a mention in our recap on The Shortlist!
Here’s to another month of learning, growth, and connection.
Justin Nagy, CPSM
