    Member Spotlight: Denise Youmans

Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Denise got into the A/E/C industry, her favorite SMPS memory, her favorite movie and book, and much more!

What led you to the A/E/C industry?

I have a journalism background and worked for American City Business Journals when they opened their 2nd Business Journal in San Jose (a long time ago!). I covered the “Real Estate” market which, of course, included A/E/C. From there, I worked for a GC, then a civil engineer, then an architect, etc. etc.

Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?

I went to my first SMPS meeting when I worked for BKF. Margaret Spaulding, who helped found the SFBAC chapter, sat at my table and was so welcoming to me. I continue to be a member because SMPS has been an impetus in much of my career growth and I still find value as the industry and marketing continue to evolve.

Do you have a favorite memory of an SMPS event?

The National Conference in Orlando, maybe 2001. I took the CPSM exam and then went to Disney World with my daughters – so relieved the exam was over!
