    Member Spotlight: Frances Baca

Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Frances got into the A/E/C industry and her favorite movies, vacation spot, and much more!

    Frances Baca
    Goring and Straja Architects
    Marketing and Office Manager

What led you to the A/E/C industry?

I was moving west after living in New York City for nearly two decades. One of my colleagues connected me here at Goring and Straja. Working in the A/E/C industry was never something I imagined being a part of; my education and the majority of my work experience is in the performing arts. Had I not moved, or had the support of the team at GaS Architects, I might not have ever entered the field.

    Why did you join SMPS?

James Goring and Douglas Thornley, the principals here at Goring and Straja, encouraged me to join. I continue to be a member because I have found it a great resource and community.

What is your favorite job task?

Designing and maintaining the company website.

Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?

Primarily I work from the office but I work remotely on occasion.

    Do you have any hobbies?

Lots–probably  too many to mention here. I sew, knit, crochet, run 5Ks to marathons, to name a few.

Do you have a favorite movie?

I am most impressed and excited by movies that utilize the ability to deliver the content in interesting or unexpected ways. The documentary Pina is an example of one with cinematic choices that stand out as a unique way to share the innovation, creativity, and life of Pina Bausch.  Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 500 Days of Summer, and Memento are a few that I really appreciate. I have also been known to binge watch Star Wars (episodes 4-6) and nearly everything Marvel, among others.

Do you have a vacation spot you recommend?

Edinburgh, Scotland–and if you don’t mind crowds and love live performance go during the Festival Fringe.

Do you have a secret skill?

Dance and choreography–primarily ballet and modern dance.

What do you like to do most in your free time?

I am very family-oriented, and I spend as much of my free time as I possibly can with them. If I am taking time for myself, I enjoy swimming laps, taking class, enjoying a performance, and I like trying new things.
