    Member Spotlight: Matt Carvell

Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Matt got into the A/E/C industry and his favorite show, restaurant, local spot, vacation spot, and much more!

What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I was fresh off a Silicon Valley startup and wanted to move to San Francisco. A good friend working at a commercial interiors firm made an introduction to their CEO, who was looking to hire their first marketer. The rest is history.

Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
I joined SMPS during the pandemic as an avenue to expand my knowledge and network in the A/E/C industry. As the sole marketer at my previous firm, I was looking for ways to level up my career and skillset alongside other marketers. At the time, I was tasked with leading a major corporate rebranding for my firm, and so I leveraged SMPS for guidance. I was able to find reliable consultants, templates, and project management spreadsheets, as well as gain advice on branding best practices.

Everyone in this organization is very driven, ambitious, and smart. I'm always impressed by new people I meet and feel motivated to do my job better.

Do you have a favorite job task?
I love working with creative people to create tangible things that capture a firm's “it factor”: an RFP with beautiful case studies and branded graphics, an event with radiant energy, and an award-winning industry submission. I love the process of working towards something creative.

Do you have a least favorite job task?
    Completing company questionnaires for RFPs.

Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
I work in an office five days a weekjust like in the old times! Our firm has alternating Fridays off, an excellent opportunity to soak in long weekends.

    Do you have any hobbies?
I'm an avid cyclist! You will find me cycling the hills of the Bay Area and beyond, parsing my cycling efforts, and discovering new culinary treats along the way.

Do you have a favorite TV show?
Severance. The ending of Season 1 might be the greatest cliffhanger of all time.

Do you have a favorite local restaurant?
Arsicault Bakery has the best croissants. Arsicualt isn't a "restaurant," but one chocolate almond croissant counts as a meal.

Is there any vacation spot you recommend?
New Zealand! I recently spent a week cycling and hiking near Queenstown while I was in between jobs. The country's culture is laid back, and the landscape offers a paradise for skiing, mountain biking, hiking, bungee jumping, and more. All at reasonable prices too. I may retire there one day!

Do you have a secret skill?
I proudly beat all songs on Guitar Hero on “Hard Mode.” I can also casually play the actual guitar too.

What do you like to do most in your free time?
I like being active, spending time with family and friends, and exploring everything San Francisco offers, from night markets to day festivals.
