    Member Spotlight: Veronica Ritona

Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Veronica got into the A/E/C industry, why she stays in SMPS, her favorite vacation spot, and much more!

What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I stumbled into the A/E/C industry back in 2012 after doing marketing for a furniture company. I think it was my experience with InDesign that opened the door to the industry. My first A/E/C manager, Vanessa Yust, who is now an SMPS Fellow and former SMPS San Francisco Chapter President, was a mentor who guided me and helped spark the passion I now have for the industry. I discovered I had both a strength and a love for this field, along with a deep sense of pride in being part of a community that designs and builds the spaces where we live, work, and connect.

Why did you join SMPS and/or why do you continue to be a member?
I joined SMPS just months after starting in the industry, encouraged by Vanessa. It was a great way to connect with others in the industry. As someone new to the field at the time, I found the organization incredibly helpful for my growth, development, access to resources, and building relationships. I continue to be a member and part of the Future and Emerging Committee because I believe it's important to be that same kind of resource for others who are just starting and to give back in the way SMPS has given to me.

Do you have a favorite job task?
My favorite job task is interview prep. I really enjoy bringing the proposed team together to talk through the project, strategize how to put our best foot forward, and help the team prepare for a strong interview. I especially love working with different people and their unique presentation styles, supporting them in refining their approach when needed. It’s so rewarding to help deliver a presentation that truly shows our understanding of the project, our passion for the work, and our excitement to partner on something great.

Do you have a least favorite job task?
My least favorite task is working on qualification forms and prequalification packages. While I understand their importance, they tend to be repetitive and time-consuming compared to other, more creative or strategic parts of the job.

Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
Hybrid: three days in the office and two days at home.

    Do you have any hobbies?
My hobbies mostly revolve around my teenage son’s hobbies. He plays baseball, so half the year is spent driving him to and from practices, games, and other places. Outside of that, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, whether it’s trying a new restaurant, doing something fun outdoors, or just hanging out locally and enjoying all that the Bay Area has to offer.

Do you have a favorite TV show?
My all-time favorite show will always be Friends, but Schitt’s Creek is a close second.

Do you have a favorite local restaurant?
As someone who loves food and trying new places, I don’t have just one favorite restaurant—I have many spots I enjoy visiting.

Is there any vacation spot you recommend?
If I had to recommend one vacation spot, it would be Jamaica. The people are amazing, the food is delicious, and the vibe is so relaxing—no worries, just like Bob Marley said. That said, every trip I’ve taken has created great memories, and I believe you can find that wherever you choose to travel.

Do you have a secret skill?
I’m pretty good at planning events. I often organize big family milestones and at one point considered becoming an event or corporate planner. It’s always rewarding to see everything come together.

What do you like to do most in your free time?
As a busy bee, when I do have free time, and nothing planned, I admit I really enjoy just relaxing and binge-watching shows or movies.
