Member Spotlight: Valeria Huaco
Each month we try to feature a Chapter member, asking them about SMPS and more. Find out below how Valeria got into the A/E/C industry and her favorite hobby, TV shows, local restaurant, vacation spot, and much more!
What led you to the A/E/C industry?
I’ve spoken to so many peers in the A/E/C industry who’ve said they “just fell into it,” and I was no exception. After deciding to leave my business development role at a large tech company, I knew I wanted to switch industries and get a change of pace. I reached out to a family friend who suggested I look into Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI) and the A/E/C industry. I figured it was something new and worth exploring, and, one year later, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I truly love being part of this industry.
Why did you join SMPS?
I joined shortly after starting at AEI. Our Senior Marketing Coordinator, Salina Patrick, encouraged me to get involved to learn more about the industry and gain insight from others. After attending a few events and meeting some amazing people, I knew I wanted to stay active to keep growing my network and industry knowledge.
What is your favorite job task?
I absolutely love creating resumes for our team. Getting to see the projects everyone has worked on and what makes each one special to them makes it such a fun task. It’s also helped me get to know my coworkers quickly and develop an even greater appreciation for the amazing work AEI has done.
Do you work from home, in the office, or a hybrid?
I have a hybrid schedule. Three days at our SF office and two from home.
Do you have any hobbies?
Whether it’s attending a concert or festival, playing my instruments, or rehearsing and performing with my a cappella group, you can usually find me doing something related to music. If I’m not, I’m probably out shopping or traveling!
Do you have a favorite TV Show?
Arrested Development is my all-time favorite show, followed closely by Derry Girls. I highly recommend both if you’re looking for some laughs.
Do you have a favorite local restaurant?
Lita in Walnut Creek is my favorite restaurant, but I recently tried the Locanda restaurant chain (Positano and Ravello specifically), and I haven’t stopped thinking about their menus since.
Do you have a vacation spot you recommend?
NYC has my heart! If I didn’t live in the Bay, I’d definitely be living there. There’s always something to do, and it has that classic, nostalgic, dare I say, magical feel. I firmly believe everyone should experience Christmas in New York at least once.
Do you have a secret skill?
Probably singing! I’m part of a semi-professional a cappella group that performs all along the West Coast. One of my favorite experiences was opening for Montell Jordan at the Chase Center tree lighting last year.
What do you like to do most in your free time?
I love spending time with my family and friends, so I try to see them as often as possible. Now that I’m living on my own for the first time, I value that quality time more than ever. Whether it’s a game night or a night out, you can usually find me with them.
